Sweden combines a large northern European territory with a relatively concentrated population, strong industrial capabilities and a research system in which business enterprises account for close to three-quarters of total R&D expenditure. Constitutional & electoral context
Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The Riksdag has 349 members and the Prime Minister is appointed through the parliamentary process. The 2026 general election took place on 13 September. Preliminary figures reported by the Swedish Election Authority showed a very narrow difference between the parliamentary blocs while final counting and the subsequent government-formation process were still underway on 16 September.
